Corine and I went out to try for lake trout one last time before the season closed. We headed out a little later in the day and headed to one of our favorite lake trout lakes. The fishing was very slow and after a couple hours hadn't even seen a fish on the flasher. Then moved into extremely shallow water to try something different and in about 15 minutes we landed three lakers, 2 in 9' and one in about 12'. It was a bit different but seemed to be the ticket and salvaged out trip!

So this is now the second annual "Broads and rods" girls fishing trip held on Black Bay on Lake Superior fishing for perch. (Corine came up with he name) I tagged along as labour as the girls caught perch all day long. Went out last night for a bit of a different fishing trip. Went out in the late afternoon to a local lake trout lake with decent numbers of ling and setup for ling in the dark. It was a windy cold night, so we setup the portable shelter, and after it got dark cold and even windier, we visited inside waiting for the set lines to go. We were using some frozen smelt, cured in Pautzke Fire Brine for some colour, flavour and to firm the smelt up, and sat them right on bottom waiting for a ling to sniff em out, and it worked great! It seems this winter nearly all of my brook trout fishing trips have had bad luck attached between access, snowmobile issues a it seems I have been destined for failure each time. I went out with a couple friends yesterday to try a remote Brooktrout lake that is stocked with a good numbers. It was a bit of an expedition getting to the lake and within 30 feet of driving on the lake my friends machine got hopelessly buried in the slush like I've never see there was mountains of snow and a whore a thick layer of slush and water beneath that was disaster for the machine. After some serious effort to get the machine and slay out of there we headed to another lake that was unfortunately unsuccessful. Still a nice day to go out for a ride! Went for a second day at squeers. Was a bit colder day, started off around -29, and the fishing was significantly slower, fished a couple spots and ended up with a few decent eaters. Went to Squeers Lk today, an MNR lake trout research lake, only open for about a week a year, where Mnr collects data from anglers fish. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/NWSI/Publication/MNR_E005408P.html Had a great day, the weather cooperated, the trail in was better than many years, and slush on the lake was minimal. It looked like it had been bad in a couple spots but has frozen up and we had no issues in the couple spots we fished. Feb28/Mar1-14 Team NOSA held the annual big game event, during the Trappers Convention. Had some great NW Onario animals brought in and scored! |
