Fall turkey hunting was a far different experience than the Spring hunting I've done, but it was a blast. Saw a decent number of turkeys, and had some real close encounters with a few whitetails, and harvested a turkey on my last night there!
Decided to try my luck at fall turkey hunting in Wisconsin this year. Went down and hunted with my wife's Uncle, near Milwaukee WI. Took the 1,000km journey from Thunder Bay to Milwaukee, and spent a couple days chasing turkeys.

Got out a couple weeks ago for a fall salmon fishing trip with Corine. Ended up with a few gorgeous Cohos! Had a great day on a few different rivers and saw some gorgeous country! Got out for the week for opening of the moose rifle season with family for our annual moose hunt. We had a rifle bull tag and spent the week trying to fill it. It was a tough week, saw very little moose activity, and a serious increase in wolf activity. Had wolves respond regularly to moose calling, and saw fresh wolf tracks and scat
Got out awhlie back with a friends kid to try and get him an archery bear. Spent two nights in a cornfield, and had some neat experiences both nights; saw three different bears each night!
check out the video below for one of the close calls! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2my2MGKSTw0 Our group drew a bull archery tag this year, and I was pretty excited to try my luck at luring in a rut crazed bull!
We got out for a couple day trips, and then spent the better part of a week out at camp trying to fill out tag. We saw some decent activity, and one day during our week out, we ended up getting some responses to calls, and found a few moose calling in a lowland off an old cut. I did some calling, and had a bull responding, calling steadily as he came in. He closed the distance to about a hundred yards, but held there, and wouldnt come any closer. We hunted hard til near the end of the season with no success. I then went out for a day to a friends property where he had seen a small yearling bull on the property. We setup a ground blind the night before, and sat in it at first light. We hung out some synthetic cow estrous, and within an hour hear cracking behind us. It was then followed by about ten grunts, sounding like he was grunting with each step, until he came in and stopped at about 6 yards! He froze up there for what seemed like an eternity, and then started walking away, giving me a brief opportunity to take a shot between some poplars as he walked away at about ten yards. He ran off, and piled up less than 40 yards away! I had had some issues with my compound bow during the hunt the week prior that hadnt been resolved yet, so I took the crossbow out, and the tenpoint did an amazing job! here's a link the the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2UIMOXyNbg So I've been a bit slow with updating this; been hunting more than anything else lately!
Been an interesting archery season so far, have had some great experiences, close calls, errors and successes. I've been chasing a couple particular bucks lately, and I started chasing them while they were in velvet. Got some great trail cam pics and they were in a good routine. I Sat in that stand for days upon days and finally had one of these big guys come in but due to his approach I couldn't move to draw my bow and a swirling wind eventually busted me. I Saw him again a couple weeks later, and even drew on him but he only offered a slightly quartered towards shot-No good shot and it got too dark. He was in with another decent buck that I've seen three times now, one that's going to be left to grow for another year. After things slowed down at my stand site, I moved my setup about two hundred yards, and started getting pictures again. I saw the second of the two big bucks, one with a real interesting rack, but couldnt get a shot as he moved through cover. I've tried to log my time in this stand, its been alot of time spent in that tree, and had some excitement, but no success yet! Sept 3 4-9 Sept 5 7-11 and 5-9 September 6 7-11 September 7 5-9 Sept 8 5-9 saw big velvet 11 pt but was winded (trail cam pic below on sept 8 was taken while in stand) Sept 9 5-9 Sept 10 5-9 Sept 17 5-9 saw decent ten point (cell phone pic of him below taken while hunting) Sept 18 6-9 saw two-big 11 and buck with mass- no shot Oct 3 730-1430 saw decent ten point again Oct 4 730-1130 Oct 15 1300-1945 saw decent 10 again Oct 22 8-12 new site-saw nice buck w mass cruising through brush Oct 23 8-12 Got out for an evening deer hunt on Oct 18 and a morning hunt on Oct 21st, trying to harvest a deer with a bow. Sat in one of my go to deer stands on the edge of an alfalfa field, and saw two bears! time to move my stand!
